Analytical Support for Trade Negotiations

ILEAP provides practical, timely and independent inter-disciplinary advice in trade negotiations to developing countries. In the short-term, the focus of ILEAP’s activities is on issues such as agriculture, services, non-agricultural market access, special and differential treatment for developing countries, aid for trade, and trade facilitation. ILEAP further focuses on bilateral negotiations between developing and developed countries.

ILEAP engages advisors who are experienced professionals, including practicing lawyers, economists, former trade negotiators, and accomplished scholars, to work with representatives from developing countries in order to help them define the overall orientation of required support. ILEAP tries, as much as possible, to engage lawyers and economists from developing countries to work on its projects. Over time, ILEAP hopes to address various dimensions of the deficit in professional advice for developing countries by facilitating the emergence of a multidisciplinary network of trade experts.

Projects under ILEAP's Analytical Support for Trade Negotiations programme can be categorized into two main groups:

Support to developing countries in the WTO negotiations

Support to developing countries in regional negotiations
